FAQ

Answers to common questions about training at Denver's oldest judo club.

What is judo?

Judo is a modern Japanese martial art and Olympic sport created by Jigoro Kano in 1882. It emphasizes throws, pins, joint locks, and chokes. The word "judo" means "the gentle way" — using an opponent's force against them rather than meeting it head-on.

What ages do you accept?

DBT Judo accepts students of all ages. Students over 7 years of age must show proficiency in breakfalling (ukemi) to transfer into the regular class. All beginners start in our New Student Orientation and Beginner's Falling Class.

When are classes held?

Regular Practice (Experienced Kids & Adults): Monday & Thursday, 6:30 – 8:00 PM

Beginner Classes: Run in approximately 3-month cycles (quarterly). You must sign up the previous quarter. Contact Sensei for the current schedule.

How much does it cost?

Monthly dues are $50/month for one member, plus $15/month for each additional household member, plus $2.25/month per member to cover temple fees. Payment is made via PayPal (no PayPal account needed).

You will also need a current USA Judo membership.

See our Dues & Donations page for full pricing details.

Do I need experience to join?

No prior experience is needed. New students must register for the New Student Orientation and Beginner's Falling Class, which covers judo history, etiquette, basic movements, and ukemi (breakfalling). Each beginner session consists of 8 classes — you must attend all 8.

What should I wear?

A judo gi (uniform) is recommended but not required for beginners. If you don't have a gi, wear sweatpants and a short or long sleeve t-shirt. No buttons or zippers.

Bring sandals or easy on/off footwear for walking to and from the mat. Remove all jewelry and tie up long hair with an elastic band.

I have judo experience. Can I join regular practice?

Experienced judoka with a Rokkyu (6th grade yellow belt) or higher may register at any regular practice on Monday or Thursday. You must bring a copy of your promotion certificate and proof of registration with USJF, USJA, or USA Judo. A current USA Judo membership and New Student Enrollment Form are still required.

Where do I park?

The dojo is located at the Denver Buddhist Temple, 1947 Lawrence St, Denver, CO 80216. There is a parking garage at the temple.

On Monday nights, members with a parking pass hang tag do not need to input a parking pass code at the kiosk. Enter through the garage entrance on level 2 — do not use the alley doorway. On Rockies game nights, parking under the gym may require accessing the garage from level 2.

What is Jita Kyoei?

Jita Kyoei means "mutual benefit and welfare" — it is the guiding principle of our dojo. We train hard but safely, always looking out for one another on and off the mat. This principle, central to Jigoro Kano's teachings, reflects our commitment to building each other up through disciplined practice.

Does the club compete in tournaments?

Yes. DBT Judo is affiliated with the Colorado Judo League and participates in tournaments throughout the season. The club also hosts the annual Albert Tagawa Memorial Judo Championship. Tournament registration is typically done through SmoothComp.
